5 things to know about dripstone caves in Minecraft 1.18

An overworld biome introduced in Minecraft 1.17 during the Caves and cliffs update, Dripstone Caves are biomes rife with dripstone stalagmites and stalactites that also often contain water and copper ore.

Although they have only been around for a short time, Dripstone Caves have grown in popularity significantly, due to the unique nature of Dripstone and the intriguing beauty that the biome itself brings in comparison to other caves.

However, although they may seem like standard biomes, Dripstone Caves are a few things to keep in mind when venturing through one.

1) There are differences in biomes between Minecraft versions

The Java and Bedrock versions of Minecraft have long had differences between them, and are no different when it comes to aspects of Dripstone Caves. The two iterations differ in temperature and the color of their foliage.

However, mob spawning probabilities and behavior appear to be more or less the same, which is somewhat odd, as many of the differences between the two versions of Minecraft have to do with mob spawn rates. Regardless, attentive Minecraft players can notice subtle visual differences between the two versions of Dripstone Caves.

2) water wells are generated

Dripstone caves cannot claim their name without two things, dripstone and water. Dripstone cave biomes often contain small reservoirs of water, usually in small areas of 1x1 or similar size. These particular cave biomes can also hold quite a lot of water, but players shouldn't be surprised to see very small water pools as well. This is probably an aesthetic choice, as many of the caves that inspired the Dripstone Caves were like the Hang Son ong in Vietnam, which has a large underground river.

3) Drowned and glowing squids can lay eggs in these water wells

Since water is present within the Dripstone Caves, Drowned are able to create the form of hostile hordes within the biome. Not only that, but the underground nature of the Dripstone Caves also allows non-hostile hordes, such as the glowing squid, to appear within their waters.

Players should keep an eye out for these mobs in biomes, as they are not often found in Minecraft's cave biomes.

4) Dripstone caves yield more copper ore

Many ores in Minecraft are generated in small groups called blobs, and blobs can present more or less ore blocks depending on the biome they are found in.

When in Dripstone Caves, players can expect to find a few more copper ore blocks per drop than in other mountain or cave biomes. If players are looking for a great place to get some extra copper for their projects, Dripstone Caves are a solid scouting spot.

5) Dripstone caves can still be dangerous

As an underground cave, the Dripstone Cave Biome is just as dangerous as other cave biomes. In addition, these biomes are capable of spawning within ravines, meaning that unsuspecting players can suffer a terrible fall if they do not remain vigilant.

Hostile hordes found elsewhere in the Overworld also exist within the Dripstone Caves, including zombies, spiders, slime, skeletons, endermen, witches, and creepers. Even the enemies of spider and chicken jockey can lay eggs on very rare occasions.

There is much to enjoy in Dripstone Caves, but while players should always keep their guard while exploring, the dangers don't end just because players have entered a new biome.
